In the midst of all the hubbub of the post-Thanksgiving shopping season, people are reminded of the importance of supporting their local businesses through Small Business Saturday.

The annual shopping holiday was started several years ago as a combined effort of a national initiative and participation from local chambers of commerce. It has since become a popular avenue for holiday shopping, and one of the most important days for local retail. In Perry the last couple years, the downtown area has been flooded with regional shoppers the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and Chamber Director Lynsi Pasutti expects it to be no different this year. She discusses the importance of the observance. “With Small Business Saturday, it’s just a chance to really drive home the message that shopping local is very important. We have a lot of fantastic locally owned independent businesses, and they do a lot to support our community.”

Deb Bengtson, the Director of the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce, echoes Pasutti’s thoughts, and points out that around Adel there will be more than 30 member businesses taking part in Small Business Saturday. She says most of the businesses will have free “Shop Small” merchandise on hand, such as tote bags to help carry around your purchases. Additionally, while there’s no official chamber-wide specials during the day in Perry or Adel, many individual businesses are offering deals and specials on merchandise and food.
