Whether you’re spending Thanksgiving in Guthrie Center or just traveling through, the public is welcome to get a first look at its 26th annual lighted park display.
Mitchell Park, located on Highway 44 on the west side of town, is turned into a brightly-shone, holiday drive-through attraction, which traditionally begins on Thanksgiving and is open through Christmas. The park features many homemade and other displays from residents, businesses, and organizations, and gets bigger every year. Organizer Jo Laughery gives perspective on the effort the attraction requires, “Every year we have to replace probably over 600 lightbulbs, it goes in the light strings that go in the milk jugs. And then of course, you know, that working with lights that some will work and some won’t, and we have the big tree at the entrance and we have like five or six strings of commercial lights. We about every other year have to replace some of them.”
Laughery encourages new and returning visitors to come see what’s in store for this year’s display. Free-will donations are also appreciated to continue this free entertainment, either at the park’s drop-off box, or at Guthrie County State Bank or Peoples Bank in Guthrie Center.
