The Public House

One downtown property in Jefferson recently received a grant through Main Street Iowa.

A challenge grant of $75,000 was given to owners Amanda Bills and Addi Meyers for their property at the intersection of Chestnut and East State streets. Known as The Public House, Meyers says they will use the grant to renovate the six upper-story apartments. She adds, specifically, the money will be used to address a recent roof issue, along with replacing wood panels on the front facade with windows.

Meyers notes the reason why they want to concentrate on the apartments first is because it’s part of their business plan, with the second phase to open a business-class restaurant on the main level. She says the rental income from the apartments would help finance the restaurant.

Jefferson Matters: Main Street helped apply for the grant and JMMS Program Director Peg Raney says this project is part of the county’s Vision 2020 plan to have a tap room/restaurant. Meyers says she and Bills are grateful for the help and partnership of JMMS and the City of Jefferson as this project continues to move forward.
