The Perry Elks Lodge #407 recently made a donation that they believe will enhance the lives of local veterans suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, striking a partnership with Perry Lutheran Homes.
The Elks gave $250 to support the groundbreaking “Music and Memory” program at the senior care facility, earmarking it specifically for veterans. In a statement, Perry Elks Grant Coordinator Lisa Widick said the Lodge was happy to provide funding for the project, especially as it helps improve the lives of the residents at Perry Lutheran Homes, in particular those who served in the military. The money will help purchase MP3 players, headphones, and personalized music selections for veteran residents in the St. James and St. John’s memory care units.
PLH COO and Administrator Melissa Gannon thanked the Perry Elks for their generosity, and promised the funds will be put to good use. Perry Lutheran Homes operates one of 23 “Music and Memory” programs in Iowa, which uses personalized playlists for people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. Neuroscience research has proven that music can support memory retrieval, reduce agitation and anxiety, and engage and enrich the lives of people living with the diseases.
