Everyone already knew that the Iowa Department of Transportation was going to take over the driver’s license function in Dallas County, though the transition is happening much earlier than anticipated.
The DOT will officially be in charge of license issuance in the County starting on November 21st. Initially, the transition wasn’t supposed to happen until the beginning of January. However, due to staffing issues with the Dallas County Treasurer’s Office, the timetable was moved up. Treasurer Mitch Hambleton said he had three full-time employees at the station in Adel as recently as September. One of them was hired by the DOT to work in the new station, though was pulled away from the site for training. The other two were then hired to work elsewhere in the Treasurer’s Office, and Hambleton wanted them in their new positions as quickly as possible.
The Dallas County Board of Supervisors then ended the 28E agreement with the DOT to provide the driver’s license function, which expedited the process for the State. For now, the function will remain in the current location in Adel, and will transition to the new location in Waukee sometime after the start of 2020. The DOT also points out that the hours for the station will change once the shift is complete, including being open Saturdays.
