A little inclement weather and a delayed start Monday morning couldn’t halt one of the longest-running traditions in central Iowa, as the Perry School District once again held their annual Veterans Day Celebration.

School was delayed two hours, which caused the cancellation of the breakfast and morning refreshments, and it also delayed the 31st annual Social Studies Department panel to the afternoon. However, the 22nd annual Veterans Day program was held at the normal time of 10 a.m., and it was well-attended by veterans, the community, and Perry students. Mike Powell with the Perry American Legion was once again master of ceremonies, and his father John Powell was this year’s keynote speaker. Additionally, there were presentations from the Perry Historic Preservation Commission and Piecemakers Quilt Guild, as well as musical and poetry performances from students and staff.

Perry Activities Director Tom Lipovac said the event is one of the most important observances for the community every year, and he was proud that not even snow-covered roads could keep people away. “It’s a very special day for the Perry Community School District each year with Veterans Day. It’s our way to show our appreciation. We reflect on those who came before us, we recognize those who are with us now, and we hope to inspire those that will follow.”

Following the program, attendees were invited to have lunch with students. The rescheduled “We Were Soldiers” panel, moderated by social studies teacher Gary Overla, was held at 12:30 p.m.
