The Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School Drama Department is tackling a musical that’s “practically perfect in every way” this fall.
The ACGC students are performing “Mary Poppins,” based on the 1964 Disney film and the children’s books by P.L. Travers. Junior Audrey Stowe is playing the title character of the umbrella wielding, magical British nanny, and sophomore Tommy Bates is the jack of all trades and narrator, Bert. Stowe and Bates comment on what it’s like playing adults opposite the Banks children characters, “So Kiersten Knobbe is playing Jane and Trever Derry is playing Michael and it’s actually kind of easy to treat them as children because they’re both kind of short. They’re very small, both of them, so that definitely helps. Trever who plays Michael, he’s growing a lot so we need him to stop so he can keep being a kid. But they’re great and they’re doing so well, they’re both freshmen so it’s really fun to play with them, though.”
With ACGC students accompanying as the pit band, the musical features popular songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Step in Time,” as well as newer songs from the stage adaptation. Performances will take place Friday, November 15th and Saturday the 16th at 7 p.m., and Sunday the 17th at 2 p.m. at the high school auditorium in Guthrie Center. Tickets are $5 at the door.
