In 2014 and ’15, Greene County and Algona were in the same Class 3A football district and each team won on their home field. Greene County won 21-6 in 2014 and Algona won the following year 35-28 in Kossuth County. Friday, the two programs will meet for the first time since then with a trip to the Class 2A semifinals inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on the line.
Both teams have been strong in 2A the past two seasons after struggling in Class 3A. Algona won just one game in 2014, and Greene County had only one win in 2016 and ’17. In 2A the last two seasons, the Bulldogs are 19-2 with a 9-2 mark last season and a 10-0 record and number 3 RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) so far this year. The Rams are 17-3 over the past two seasons with 8 wins and 2 losses last year and a 9-1 record so far this season and number 8 RPI. Both teams have been in the playoffs each of the last two seasons.
Algona is in the playoffs for the sixth time in program history and they are 5-5 in playoff games. The Rams are in the playoffs for the twelfth time with a 7-11 record.
