Led by a deep and talented Senior class, the Greene County High School football team is going somewhere none of the previous seven squads have been; beyond the first round of the playoffs! Friday’s 35-21 Class 2A first round victory over Des Moines Christian on the Lions’ home field in Urbandale improved the Rams’ record to 9-1 and put them among the only eight teams in the class still playing. Not only are the wins the most and the upcoming appearance in the quarterfinals the first in the eight years playing as Greene County, Friday’s victory was the first in the playoffs for a Rams team since 2009 when 32 programs from each class made the postseason. That year, Jefferson-Scranton/Paton-Churdan won 20-17 in Charles City to open the playoffs and advanced  to the round of 16 before losing. The win was also just the third on the road in Jefferson-based football history and playoff win number seven overall.

Greene County will continue to attempt to make history this Friday night in Algona against the 10-0 Bulldogs, the number three team in the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index). No Rams team has ever won two road playoff games in the same season, which is what head coach Caden Duncan’s team will need to do if they are to advance to the Nov. 16 semifinals inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

Friday’s quarterfinal from Algona can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 6 p.m with kickoff at 7 p.m.
