Something you may not know about Dallas County Conservation: they manage an area specifically designed for youth hunting.

The Voas Nature Area west of Minburn includes a youth hunting area, which is free to use. Permits are required to utilize the area, and there are just two permits issued daily, one each for the morning and evening. The youth hunters must be age 15 or younger and must be accompanied by a licensed hunter over age 21. The mentoring adult is not allowed to carry a firearm in the designated youth zone. Parties can be up to six people, but there must be a one-to-one ratio for youths to mentors. Participants must bring their own equipment, including weapons and proper hunting attire.

The Voas Youth Hunting Area was created in 2010 as a way to encourage kids to participate in more outdoor recreational opportunities in a safe and positive environment. The youth specific area is 100 acres, and contains deer, turkey, pheasant, waterfowl, and other small game. The hunting trips must coincide with the designated season. As a reminder, there is also 333 acres at Voas designated for public hunting, as well as a 272-acre wildlife refuge where hunting isn’t allowed. Permits can be obtained by stopping in or calling Forest Park Museum in Perry at 515-465-3577, or by emailing conservation@dallascountyiowa.gov.
