With Halloween happening Thursday, the public is once again reminded to stay safe. Additionally, the community is advised to not create any trouble.
Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn says criminal mischief is something officers keep an eye out for all the time, though their alert level increases at this time of year. He emphasizes that even though a Halloween prank may seem harmless, it can cause more trouble than the perpetrator may realize. “Some of those things don’t cause a huge amount of damage, but just some inconvenience, like toilet paper and soaping windows up. But I think sometimes people don’t understand the damage that like throwing an egg against a car or a house — how that can chip paint (or) discolor paint, that type of thing — shaving cream, those type of things really cause a lot of damage. And the cost to repair those can go up really quickly, so we want to try to avoid that and avoid those criminal charges that could really land you in some hot water and (you’d) be facing some hefty bills.”
Vaughn also reminds holiday revelers to be careful while going door-to-door this Beggar’s Night, particularly because visibility could be lower than normal depending on the weather.
