Presentation of certificates of valor. (L-R): Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams, Deputy Shane Allen, Nate Byerly with Churdan Rescue and Greene County Supervisor Chair John Muir in October 2019

The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

The Board and Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams presented certificates of valor to Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Allen and Nate Byerly with Churdan Fire and Rescue. They were honored for their rescue of a woman whose vehicle submerged in a creek on October 10th. Williams said their heroism went above and beyond the call of duty.

The Board then approved a solicitation for photos of Floyd Brown and other veterans to be displayed in the south lobby of the Greene County Courthouse. A request was made by Greene County Veterans Affairs Director Mike Bierl, Barb Labate of the Jefferson American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion member Jim Andrew to permanently display Brown’s photo and have other photos of county veterans on display periodically. As per the public art policy, the Board will consider formally approving the request at their next regular meeting.

During open forum, Sheriff Williams updated the Board on several topics. He said Central Iowa Juvenile Services will pay to transport juveniles and adults who have mental health committals. Williams mentioned that he is working with County Attorney Thomas Laehn on a vicious animal ordinance. He said recently one dog bit three people and there is no ordinance on how to handle when an animal is deemed vicious and when it is provoked. Finally, he notified the Board of a large bill that will be presented at a future date from his office. Williams said they will have to go to New York to pick up an alleged criminal who has charges in Greene County. Laehn said the amount the individual stole from residents was significant enough to go to such lengths to transport someone back.

Laehn also addressed the Board during open forum. He said the City of Jefferson received the notice to terminate the 28E agreement for dispatch services. The City said they are willing to negotiate a new agreement with increased payment for services to start the next fiscal year. He mentioned Assistant County Attorney Laura Snider has requested an increase of her part-time hours. The Board took no action but was willing to discuss the topic further.

Finally, the meeting ended with discussion about insurance renewal with Group Benefit Partners.
