The next show in the 2019-20 concert series through the Perry Fine Arts Group is coming this Saturday, and the public is invited to take part in a fun annual tradition: Tuba Day.

The 41st annual William Bell Memorial Tuba and Euphonium Day will be held throughout the day at different locations. Fine Arts Committee member Cathy Clark says this is one of their yearly traditions, which seems to get more popular each year. The event will start with a clinic at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Josh Calkin, an Associate Professor of Low Brass and Assistant Director of Bands at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Registration will start at 12:30 p.m., with the class starting at 1, and Clark says people of all ages who have an affinity for low brass instruments are welcome to attend and be part of a concert later in the day. There is a $10 fee for students and $15 for adults to take part in the clinic, and participants will need to bring their own instruments.

At 3 p.m., Calkin will have a solo performance that’s open to the public, and the ensemble show will start at 4. After that, the audience is invited to Violet Hill Cemetery, where the musicians will perform their annual tribute to William Bell at his grave site. There will be refreshments available after the performance at the cemetery. Clark says Tuba Day is a unique experience each year, and encourages everyone to give it a try. “You think of tubas as being ‘oompa, oompa,’ (but) it’s more than that. It’s really, really kind of neat, so I would encourage you to come and try it at least once! We’ve been doing this for more than 40 years, so it’s really kind of impressive.”
