howl-o-ween-2019-1

Seeing a bunch of pooches running around the Perry Dog Park on a Sunday afternoon isn’t out of the ordinary, but when one of those dogs is dressed as a pumpkin, you probably could have guessed something was going on.

That something was the first annual “Howl-o-ween” event, hosted by Raccoon River Pet Rescue. Activities during the celebration included photo and kissing booths, games, treats for both dogs and their humans, and of course some good old fashioned playtime in the park. There was also a dog costume contest with prizes, and a raffle drawing. Event organizer Joelle Miner, who is on the Raccoon River Pet Rescue Board, said they were worried the weather may keep people away, but was happy that wasn’t the case. “Well, for the temperatures and the wind and everything, we are thrilled! We probably had 20 dogs down here running around, and I think six in costume. I think that’s a pretty good sign on a day that was not any more favorable in weather. So I’m guessing that next year we’ll have a really good turnout, and we’re really pretty enthused about the turnout we had today!”

All the proceeds from the event will go towards the new animal shelter being built across the highway from the dog park, which Miner said is expected to open by the beginning of 2020. She added, the Board will continue to have fundraisers leading up to then, including bringing their kissing both to the downtown “Spooktacular” event this Thursday. The Raccoon Valley Radio Big Red Radio was also in attendance for “Howl-o-ween,” as we broadcasted live and played music during the festivities.
