The AC/GC football team ended their season Friday night.
The Chargers wrapped up their regular season when Mount Ayr came to town for senior night. The Chargers started the night just as planned. AC/GC forced Mount Ayr to punt on their first possession. The Chargers rode Gavin Cornelison down the field to take an 8-0 lead. The Raiders answered with a long touchdown drive of their own, aided by a pair of costly AC/GC penalties. AC/GC was knocking on a door step in an 8-8 game when Mount Ayr came up with a well-earned interception inside their own five-yard line. The Raiders were able to score 32 unanswered points to ride a 32-8 lead into halftime. AC/GC came out on fire in the second half. They refused to lay down and marched down the field on an almost nine-minute drive to cut the deficit to two touchdowns. AC/GC struggled to keep momentum on their side and ultimately fell 39-16.
There were some highlights in the final contest of the year. Sophomore fullback Gavin Cornelison set the AC/GC all-time season rushing record. He was also the first Charger rusher to surpass the 1,100 yard mark. Cornelison will finish the regular season ninth in Class 1A in rushing yards with 1,103. AC/GC finished 14th in RPI. Unfortunately, that was not quite high enough to get them another game. AC/GC will finish year two of the Cody Mathewson era 6-3, doubling their win total from a year ago.
The Chargers may not have made the playoffs, but they have shown eveybody that they are indeed out of the shadows.
