Good news for Jefferson businesses and residents: recycling will continue in the city.
Jefferson City Council member Matt Wetrich also serves on the recycling committee and says there will be little change to the services. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio the City will continue to provide curbside recycling pick-up and the central drop-off location will be moved from the Genesis site to mostly likely the City’s water treatment plant. Wetrich notes recyclables will then be taken to the Carroll Recycling Center. He describes other benefits with the change of services.
“While we will have transportation costs, the fees to handle the material are going to be a lot less than we were paying. So in the long run, I think we’re actually going to be ahead of the game here. We’re going to be able to expand on our recycling options and we’ll be able to recycle glass again, and we’ll be able to recycle pop and beer boxes.”
The move comes after the announcement from Genesis Development that they will no longer provide recycling services at their location on October 31st. Following budget shortfalls, the company will transition to Imagine the Possibilities on October 28th and Imagine wasn’t interested in continuing the service. Wetrich points out, Jefferson city crews will continue to pick up recycling from the drop-off locations in the other communities and haul it to the Carroll facility. He says the city councils in the other communities are discussing if they want to make any changes to their recycling systems.
The changes for Jefferson will take effect November 1st.
