A reminder: all of Dallas County is invited to pay a visit to Minburn tomorrow morning for the dedication of the County’s “Freedom Rock.”
The artwork is part of the series by Greenfield artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, with a goal of having a patriotic-themed rock in all 99 Iowa counties. Dallas County’s rock includes depictions of Perry war heroes the Wilson brothers on the south side, and famous athletes and soldiers Nile Kinnick from Adel and Bob Feller from Van Meter on the north. The artwork was commissioned by the Minburn American Legion. Since the painting was completed, the Legion has been working on other aspects of the monument, including paving a walkway around the rock and installing lights.
Tomorrow’s event will begin with a breakfast at 9 a.m. at the Nineteen14 Depot, with the dedication at 10. Vice Commander of the Minburn American Legion Don Richardson says there will be a cost for the breakfast, with a portion of the proceeds helping to pay for the project, but there’s no cost to attend the dedication. Richardson adds, the Dallas County “Freedom Rock” was completed nearly a year ahead of schedule, as Sorensen had an opening this summer because another county was delayed in acquiring their rock to serve as his canvas.
The artwork is located on the west side of Highway 169 in Minburn, just south of Nineteen14.
