Perry High School hosted special events on consecutive nights during recent varsity athletic competitions, on both occasions raising money for worthy causes.
Thursday evening, the volleyball team hosted their annual “Dig for a Cure” event during the Jayette Volleyball Invitational. The Perry players wore pink jerseys, the coaches and fans sported their own pink attire, and the opposing teams also got in on the “Pink Out” to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds from pink t-shirt sales and donation buckets benefited the American Cancer Society. Additionally, during the announcement of the Perry lineups, the players each recognized someone in their lives who is fighting cancer, or who lost their battle.
On Friday evening, the Perry football team celebrated the armed forces with their annual Military Appreciation Night. Leading up to the game, the Perry Booster Club sold shirts to raise funds for the Perry American Legion. Members of the Legion then presented the colors for the National Anthem. Additionally, there were four American flags placed behind both endzones, which were donated by the Perry Optimist Club, and the cheer squad went around the bleachers in the second quarter of the game to collect additional funds. A special guest was also honored during the game, with Perry resident Homer Perkins serving as honorary captain. The U.S. Air Force veteran was recognized prior to the game and joined the captains for the coin toss.
