Big changes are coming to the McCreary Community Building in Perry, and though you won’t see the work, you’ll likely feel it.

Parks and Recreation Director John Anderson says between the 14th and 28th of this month, crews will be replacing the boilers and chillers in the facility. Anderson points out, during that time it might get a little cold in the building, but promises it will all be worth it once the new equipment and systems are installed. “(On the) 14th, they’ll shut down the one boiler that’s operational right now. Which means the building won’t have heat, and the pool won’t have heat. I’m not real concerned about it, I anticipate losing anywhere from 5-10 degrees inside the pool water. I mean, it’s going to affect some people, obviously, but they just need to understand it’s a good thing. October is usually a good month for weather, so I don’t anticipate the rec center getting super cold. But you know, a sweatshirt might be a new thing that you want to throw in your backpack when you come work out. So (those are) things to note.”

Anderson is also happy to report that the cost of the new boiler and chillers is a lot less than he expected. When getting quotes for the equipment prior to the bidding of the project, he found prices of around $250,000 for each. However, when the bids came in, the low bid from the Baker Group out of Des Moines was $280,000 for both.
