It was a busy and eventful week for the Perry School District, as the school and community celebrated the 2019 Homecoming.
There were dress up days throughout the week at each building in the District, and the administration said nearly every student and staff member participated in at least one day. Wednesday was a bit of a roller coaster, though Volunteer Day happened without much disruption. However, the annual Homecoming parade was initially cancelled due to the weather, and the community grill out was postponed to Friday. Then plans changed late Wednesday night. The Leon Fox Invitational cross country meet scheduled for Thursday was postponed, leaving an opening that the District and Perry Chamber of Commerce decided to jump on. Both the parade and grill out were held Thursday evening, and the organizers felt both activities were a big success.
The turnaround between the downtown festivities and the next event was short, with many parade attendees quickly making their way back to the high school for the Homecoming King and Queen Coronation. As heard live on AM 1310, FM 99.7 KDLS, the gym was packed with people excited to find out who this year’s royalty would be. After a pep rally and various performances and games, the crowns were placed on the heads of Sean Parnell and Hannah Peterson. Parnell’s crowning in particular was a feel good moment for all in attendance. A special needs student who is unable to speak without the help of a tablet, Parnell was smiling from ear to ear after being named king, and expressed his deep appreciation for his fellow classmates.
The festivities then concluded the following day, starting in the morning with “High Five Friday,” where the Homecoming Court and cheer squad travelled to Perry Elementary to greet the younger students. The remainder of the school day was devoted to the intra-school competition “Game Day,” and in the evening was the football game against Webster City. The Bluejays fell to the Lynx 50-13. Additionally, during halftime, this year’s “Spirit Stick” was awarded to the senior class. The final activity for the week was the Homecoming dance, held in the high school commons following the game.
