Cooler temperatures are being felt in the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area, which means a strong chance of changing leaf colors this fall.

The latest Fall Color Report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources shows that the estimated peak viewing time for fall leaf color is early October. Right now the report observes in west central and southwest Iowa the last of the fall prairie plants are in bloom and the prairies are showing their full fall colors. Cottonwood trees are beginning to turn, and shrubs are slowly turning, with sumac showing hints of brilliant red and dogwoods fading to a grayish purple. Oaks, hickories, and ironwoods are not far behind.
