Greene County is not immune to the sudden craze of the new black out license plates that the State of Iowa issued earlier this year.

The new plates feature a black background with white lettering. Sales of the plates goes to the state’s Road Use Tax Fund for infrastructure projects. Greene County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen says they sold out of their first set of 50 plates and have ordered more.

“We do have new black out plates and new numbers. I think right now it’s I-S-R. Everyone seems to be interested in what the letters and numbers are, so it’s I-S-R that we have right now. I bet we’re pushing 75 right now that we’ve issued.”

Mechaelsen explains, if you want a standard issued plate, you must bring in your current vehicle registration and the current plates to have them exchanged for the new plates.

“So if you come in tomorrow, and you want black out plates, we’ll collect $35 from you. And then if your registration is only good until December (2019) you’re going to pay your normal registration fee, plus $10.”

Mechaelsen adds if you want personalized plates, cost is $60 with a $15 annual renewal fee, and it takes five weeks to receive those by mail. Anyone with questions about the new plates can contact the Greene County Treasurer’s office at 515-386-5675.
