Residents interested in learning the results of a study to improve water quality in Meadow Lake in Adair County are invited to attend a meeting next week.

The lake, located about seven miles north of Greenfield, is on the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ list of impaired waters for high levels of algae and turbidity, which means the degree of cloudiness in water due to the presence of suspended solids. The DNR water quality improvement plan shows how these problems are caused by too much phosphorus in the lake, which impacts recreation and aquatic life. It also offers potential solutions to reduce phosphorus levels and work towards fixing the problem. The DNR’s meeting will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 8th at Greenfield City Hall. After gathering the public’s comments, the DNR will send the final plan, known as the Total Maximum Daily Load, to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for approval. Those who are unable to attend the meeting can find a link to submit comments here.
