Don’t forget, this evening is the annual Dallas County Relay for Life event, and the community is invited to join in the celebration of cancer survivors and the fight to stop the disease.
Organizer Tracy Iles says the theme for this year is “Game On – Join the Fight! Playing Games, but Not with Cancer!”, and the laps throughout the night will reflect that idea. “We’re doing the board game theme, so we don’t necessarily have theme laps, but each half hour to an hour we’ll be playing a different game. We’ll have Operation, we have Clue, we’ll have a Jenga tournament, Scrabble, we have BINGO. (And) everybody’s favorite, we have (a) frozen t-shirt contest, that kind of thing.”
The event will be held today from 3-10 p.m. in the Perry High School gym. It was moved inside due to the possibility of inclement weather. The schedule for the evening includes: the opening ceremony and recognition of honorary survivor Kay Finneseth at 4; the survivor, caregiver, and team laps following the ceremony; the community dinner at 5; regular laps at 5:30; and the Luminaria and closing ceremonies at 9. All proceeds raised prior to and during the event will benefit the American Cancer Society. The money already brought in includes $824.36 from the recent “round-up” fundraiser held at the Fareway in Perry.
