This Saturday, the Iowa Fire Museum in Perry will be hosting their annual co-ed softball tournament, though there’s a different twist to this year’s event.
Assistant Perry Fire Chief Brian Eiteman says the money raised from concessions will be donated to the family of 12-year-old Kamdyn Hike. Kamdyn died earlier this month after suffering an acute asthma attack, and he donated his organs and tissue to patients in need of transplants. Eiteman says the tournament organizers wanted to pay back Kamdyn’s generosity by helping his family pay for hospital and funeral expenses. Additionally, there will be an assortment of raffle items donated by local businesses, with all proceeds going to the Hike family. Eiteman talks about why they decided to support the family in need.
“Normally everything just goes right to the Fire Museum, but you know giving back has always been my goal. And the other members of our commission for the Fire Museum, that’s all of our goal: to give back. You know, some of us have had tragic events in our lives that have happened in the past. And it’s good to show people that had this happen to them that we’ve got their back, and you always have a support system around you. Just, you know, make them feel a little bit more at ease.”
Meals consist of hamburgers, brats, or hot dogs, as well as chips and a drink, for $4. Raffle tickets will be available for $1 for one, or $5 for six. The softball tournament will run from 8 a.m. to sundown on Saturday at the Pattee Park fields, and Eiteman says anyone who’s still interested in playing can contact him at 515-689-9439.
