The 2019 Dallas County Relay for Life event is this Saturday, and the community is invited to celebrate cancer survivors and join in the fight to stop the disease.
Organizer Tracy Iles says this year’s theme is “Game On – Join the Fight! Playing Games, but Not with Cancer!” With that theme in mind, there will be laps throughout the evening devoted to popular board games. The event will be held Saturday from 3-10 p.m. at the Perry High School track, though in case of inclement weather it will be moved into the high school gymnasium. The festivities will begin with the opening ceremony, including a speech from honorary survivor Kay Finneseth, followed by the survivor, caregiver, and team laps. At 5 p.m. the community dinner will begin, with the laps starting at 5:30.
The evening will wrap up with the Luminaria and closing ceremonies at 9 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, and Iles explains why it’s so important to support their cause. “Unfortunately, cancer seems to affect almost everyone, and we feel it’s very important to keep fighting and keep raising those funds for everyone that is fighting. And hopefully someday, nobody will have to fight again. We encourage everybody to come out. You know, you don’t have to be there all day, if you want to stop out for a while that’s fine. We got a lot of fun things planned for everyone.”
