We’re only 133 days away from the 2020 Iowa Caucuses, and Presidential candidates are beginning to spend a lot more time in the state. Case in point, Democratic hopeful Julián Castro spent a great deal of time Sunday in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area.

Castro is the former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama, as well as the former Mayor of San Antonio, Texas. He brought his campaign for President of the United States to the Milwaukee Depot in Jefferson, before rounding out his trip to central Iowa with a visit to Hotel Pattee in Perry. At each location, he went over his background and platform, focusing on topics such as immigration, healthcare, criminal justice reform, women’s rights, and more. He also took questions from attendees, fielding queries such as getting Latino voters to the polls, the tariff war, and foreign policy, and discussed his motivations for seeking the office of President.

“I’m running for President, first of all because I feel tremendously blessed with the opportunity that I’ve had in this country. And I want to make that kind of opportunity available for everybody. I’m also running because I believe we need a President that will represent all Americans, and a President that understands that we have to move forward as one nation, with one destiny. I’m convinced that our destiny in the years to come is to be the smartest, the healthiest, the fairest, and the most prosperous nation on Earth.”

Castro is one of 19 candidates still in the running for the Democratic Presidential nomination, many of whom have already visited the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area, or have plans to do so in the near future.
