One garment that has evolved from medieval to modern day times and has been worn by men and women in many different functions and occupations will be the focus of the next Stuart People Active for Library Service (PALS) speaker event.
The PALS are hosting author Sheila Craig to present “Remembering the Apron.” Attendees will get a hands-on experience with a quarter of Craig’s collection of over 400 aprons. Craig will talk about different fabrics, trims, styles, and uses aprons have had for men and women. PALS member Kathy Johnson says this program makes her feel nostalgic for the older generations of her family who used aprons, “I always really like the different fabrics that people choose to make an apron from, because it shows a little bit of their personality and their comfortableness. Men or women in the home doing cooking, doing baking, and the textures. The different floral patterns or stripe patterns or chevrons, whatever really appealed to someone’s taste because not everybody enjoyed baking and cooking, but having a really nice apron I think would make it a little more gentle of an activity.”
Remembering the Apron will take place from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday September 24th at the Stuart Public Library and from 2-3 p.m. the same day at the Panora Public Library. Both events are free and open to the public.
