An Adair man was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison this week for committing sexual abuse against a minor.
According to court documents, 33-year-old Matthew James Hopes pled guilty to two counts of third degree sexual abuse, a class C felony. Hopes was sentenced in Adair County to two consecutive prison terms not to exceed 10 years at the Iowa Medical Classification Center in Oakdale. After serving his sentence Hopes will be placed on a special supervised sentence for the rest of his life. He must also be registered as a sex offender for life, and he may be supervised on an electronic tracking and monitoring system, based on a validated risk assessment approved by the Department of Corrections. Hopes must pay all fines, surcharges penalties and victim restitution. He must also pay court costs, crime victim assistance program reimbursement, expenses incurred by public agencies, medical assistance program restitution, contributions to a local anti-crime organization, and legal assistance fees to the extent he is reasonably able to do so.
Hopes was arrested and charged in August of 2018 for offenses that occurred in 2014 and 2017.
