Greene County scored early and often on Friday night at Linduska Field in Jefferson en route to a 48-7 non-district high school football victory over Saydel (Des Moines). The Class 2A fifth ranked Rams improved to 3-0 while the Eagles dropped to 0-3.
Greene County led 35-0 in the first quarter and 48-0 at the half. The entire second half was played under the 35-point continuous clock rule and reserves played the last two quarters for Coach Caden Duncan’s team.
The Rams gained 238 yards of offense to 32 for the Eagles. Greene County had negative yardage after halftime and all three Ram turnovers took place with non-starters on the field. Saydel’s touchdown came with 40 seconds to play in the third quarter when Chris Malone intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards to the end zone.
When the first unit was on the field for the Rams, it was dominate. A 31 yard touchdown pass from Brent Riley to Will Hansen opened the scoring just 1:43 into the game. Carter Morton returned a punt 67 yards for a TD with 8:04 to play in quarter number one. Colby Kafer had a one yard touchdown run with 6:26 left in the first period, and Morton caught a TD pass from Riley covering 15 yads with 4:20 to go in the opening stanza. With 54 seconds remaining in the quarter, Jaxon Warnke hauled in a three yard pass from Riley and it was 35-0. Just 15 seconds into the second quarter, Morton returned a second punt for a touchdown, this one from 62 yards and it was 42-0. The final Greene County points were scored with 4:59 to play in the first half on a Riley to Warnke pass play covering 18 yards. The extra point snap was dropped and a run attempt to convert was no good.
Kafer ran the ball just seven times for 71 yards and one touchdown, while Riley was seven of eight passing for 123 yards and four TDs.
