Dallas County Conservation is hosting a free event this weekend focusing on the smallest of migratory birds.
The event is called “Hummingbird Happening” and it takes place Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at the Kuehn Conservation Area near Earlham. Conservation Outreach Coordinator Ken Keffer says they are piggybacking the new program with the annual Prairie Awakening Celebration, to be held Saturday evening. “Over the years at Prairie Awakening, we’re always seeing tons of hummingbirds moving through on migration. So we’re like, ‘You know, people love their hummingbirds, let’s try to make an event!’ So we’ll take a stroll through the prairie tracks at Kuehn, (there) should be lots of hummingbirds in the area moving through the vegetation. Maybe we’ll be able to hold some hummingbird feeders and get them to come right up close. They’re super curious, you know, they target on that red coloration, they come and just hover right in your face! So (it) should be just a fun event!”
Keffer adds, if anyone can’t make it to the event, there is a hummingbird feeder at Forest Park Museum and Arboretum in Perry, though he can’t guarantee there will be any birds there when you show up. Sunday’s program is free to attend, but registration is required because it’s weather dependent. To learn more or to sign up, stop in or call Forest Park at 515-465-3577.
