Starting this month, Iowa residents can exchange their regular license plates for the new black out plates.

Residents can visit their respective county treasurer’s office to exchange the plates. Greene County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen says they have an inventory on the numbered black out plates. If someone would like to exchange their plates for non-personalized plates, they can do so for the regular rate of $35. Mechaelsen notes you can also order the plates online, but the process will take longer.

“If you get the plates, you have to come in and give us the plates to get them on your vehicle. You can’t just order it online and put it on your vehicle. But they usually come to our office. Then we’ll call you, or email you, or send you a letter in the mail if we can’t get a hold of you. And then you are notified to come into our office and pick them up. Bring in your old plates if you can remember, we like when you bring in your old plates, and we’ll get them switched for you.”

Personalized plates can also be applied for online or by stopping by the County Treasurer’s office. The cost is $60 and the processing time can take up to five weeks. Proceeds from the new license plates benefits the state’s road use tax funds for infrastructure improvements.
