The 2020 Iowa legislative session is still several months away, but high school students in the area have an opportunity now to get involved with it through the Legislative Page program.
District 20 State Representative Ray Sorensen (R) encourages local juniors and seniors interested in politics as a career to apply to the program, as he says it’s a good way to get a foot in the door and learn more about state government. Sorensen points out that specific duties for pages vary depending on the legislator they’re assigned to, but he says typically they perform tasks such as operating the chamber switchboard, delivering messages, distributing legislation, assisting committee chairpersons, and sorting amendments. He also emphasizes that pages are a paid position, and many schools offer class credit for students working at the Legislature.
The deadline to apply for the program is Friday, October 4th. For more information including links to the application materials, click the link below.
