It’s year number two of the Greene County High School volleyball program under the direction of Chris Heisterkamp. She returns a number of letter winners from the 2018 team that went 7-22 overall and 2-5 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. Among the returning players are junior hitter Lily Muir, a second team all-conference selection a year ago, and senior setter Aubrey Heupel, who was on the 2018 all-conference honorable mention list. The other letter winners back are seniors Harleigh Weir, Paige Heaning, Sophie Havens, and junior Brianna Osterson.
Coach Heisterkamp said the girls are great to work with and the seniors have been given some additional responsibilities. “We’ve asked them to reach out and help some of the younger ones, and they are taking it and running!”
Mental toughness is an area the coach is focusing on with her players. She commented about the attitude she wants her players to have when the other team goes on a scoring run. “We’ve been focusing on what to think about when you have moments when you feel yourself shrinking back. We have to say, ‘Nope! We’re going forward! We’re going to push!'”
The Rams host Collins-Maxwell and Glidden-Ralston on Tuesday, Aug. 27 to open the 2019 season. The varsity action will be in the middle school gym in Jeferson.
