Students in Guthrie County are heading back to school tomorrow, and whether they’re walking the streets or riding the bus mornings and afternoons, motorists are urged to pay attention and follow traffic laws.

Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright advises kids to always walk on the sidewalk if there’s one available, and if there is no sidewalk to walk facing traffic. He also encourages them to stop and look left, right, and left again to see if vehicles are coming before crossing the street. He adds motorists should be mindful when following or passing school buses that make frequent stops, “If you see yellow lights, go ahead and be prepared to stop, don’t try and beat that and go around. If the driver decides to do that or chooses to do that, the buses all are equipped with cameras now, and they will get the plates. And they’ll call us and send it to us, the information, and the fines are quite hefty, and you could lose your license.”

Motorists following or approaching a bus on a two or three lane road are required to stop when the bus is stopped and the arm is extended. Arganbright also advises kids to stay alert and avoid distracted walking when entering or exiting a bus or walking to and from school.
