The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill in Greene County.

DNR officials were made aware of the fish kill in Hardin Creek, about two miles east of Jefferson, around 5pm Wednesday. A U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center staff member noticed dead fish in the creek while stream sampling. Due to the different sizes and species of fish in the creek, the affected area is three miles long. DNR officials say the source and extent of the fish kill remain under investigation.

DNR recommends downstream livestock producers to consider using another water source until the pollutant has been identified. Children and pets should be kept clear of the stream for 24 to 48 hours after the pollutant is gone. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
