With the start of the 2019 fall sports season around the corner, we’re taking a look at our favorite AC/GC moments from last fall. Our number one moment from last fall comes from the gridiron.
Entering the Charger’s sixth game of the 2018 season, things were not falling their way. They were 1-4 coming off of a 63-6 loss to Van Meter. AC/GC also had two losses by one possession. AC/GC was still getting used to the new option-style offense head coach Cody Matthewson brought with him in his first year running the show.
The Chargers got on the bus to travel to a 2-3 Clarinda team who just defeated Panorama in a thriller on the road. This night was dominated by AC/GC’s ground game as the Chargers finally saw first-hand how dangerous this offensive system can be. AC/GC was led on the evening by senior running backs Ben Kingery and Gabe Rowley who combined for nearly 400 rushing yards and four touchdowns on their way to a 38-20 victory on the road.
This game not only added to the win column, but gave a sneak peak on how dangerous this offense can be.
AC/GC would finish the year with a 3-6 record and Kingery was just one of 20 athletes to surpass the 1,000 yard rushing mark in Class 1A. The Chargers hope to build on their strong finish when they try and seek revenge on IKM-Manning August 30th.
