A car vs. semi wreck resulted in injuries to both drivers Thursday afternoon in Greene County.
According to the Greene County Sheriff’s office, the Iowa State Patrol, Greene and Carroll County Sheriff’s offices, Churdan Rescue, Carroll County Ambulance and the Jefferson, Scranton and Lanesboro Fire departments all responded to the incident at 1pm at the intersection of B Avenue and 140th Street. The report shows 59-year-old Jeffrey Bauer of Manning was heading south on B Avenue in a 2000 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer. Bauer failed to yield the right of way and struck the driver’s side of a 2014 Chevrolet Impala that was eastbound on 140th Street and driven by 33-year-old Michael Baugh of Panora.
After the two vehicles collided, the semi jackknifed across the roadway and the Impala entered the ditch and started on fire. Bauer exited the semi and pulled Baugh from the Impala. Baugh was then transported by Carroll County Ambulance to St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll and later taken by helicopter to a Des Moines hospital with life threatening injuries. Bauer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City by Churdan Rescue.
Bauer was cited for failure to yield the right of way and Baugh was cited for driving while his license was suspended, no insurance and a registration violation. Sheriff Williams adds that the Iowa Department and Transportation investigated the semi for potential defects. He says the DOT is involved anytime there is a personal injury or a fatality involving a semi.
