As the Trump Administration acted to delay tariffs on certain Chinese imports after China announced it would halt purchases of U.S. agricultural products, Iowa Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D) says Congress should act to curb the President’s authority in this ongoing trade war.

The move to halt tariffs announced Tuesday affected items like smartphones, laptops, and children’s toys. However, agricultural products, clothes, and other items remain to be hit with a 10% tariff on September 1st. While Axne says the trade war is Trump’s mess that he needs to clean up, Congress should limit the President’s tariff powers to avoid these problems in the future, “This has nothing to do with politics. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or Republican, our economic system should not fully be at the hands of one person. We’ve got to make sure that we’re sound in our decision making. We’re already hurting Iowa families, we’re hurting families across the country and any time that that’s happening Congress should always step in to make sure that the appropriate pieces are in place, so this type of thing doesn’t happen again.”

Sources say the Chinese products expecting a 10% tariff in the U.S. are valued at more than $110 billion total. To hear more from Axne, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
