At the recent Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School Board meeting, one of the primary focuses was on the new elementary building to be constructed in Adel.
The Board approved the initial schematics for the facility, as presented by FRK Architects and Engineers. Superintendent Greg Dufoe says the building will have a capacity of 650 and will house grades 2-4, just like initially planned. He says it will also be modifiable if the District decides it wants to expand the building in the future. Dufoe points out that there was a great deal of collaboration between the architects and District representatives to arrive at the designs, and he was pleased with the initial results.
“It’s been a pretty long process already to get to this point. They’ve worked really well with our principals at the elementary level (and) District leaders. And they also had a full day of user group meetings at the elementary, where they met with teachers, nurses, counsellors – all the people that will live in that building – to get their input. It just is going to be a great facility, so we’re excited to keep moving. And there can be some adjustments moving from the schematic design to the design development stage, so we’re not complete yet but we’re in a good spot!”
One specific aspect that FRK paid special heed to was creating a wing of the building designated as a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rated disaster shelter. Dufoe says that will add some cost to the overall price tag, but the Board agreed that it was something worth adding to the building. He adds, anyone is welcome to view the schematics at the District Administration Center in Adel. Eventually the plans will be available online, but Dufoe says that could take a while.
