A new rule that was recently approved by the Iowa Board of Education seeks to improve safety on school buses.

The Board approved requiring all newly purchased buses to have seat belts installed in them. Greene County School District Superintendent Tim Christensen agrees that student safety on buses is his primary concern, but he does have some issues with the new rule.

“Logistics are the things that really concern me at this point in time. Just not sure how it’s all going to play out in terms of how a bus driver is going to ensure that every single student has their seat belt buckled? How they’re going to ensure that through the trip that it remains buckled.”

Christensen is hoping that these new rules will answer his concerns. The School District purchased a new bus for this upcoming school year, which isn’t subject to the new rule. Any bus purchased after October 2nd must have seat belts installed.
