The 14th annual Trent Miner Memorial Parent/Child Golf Tournament will be held this Sunday, bringing kids and adults together for a charitable cause at the Perry Golf and Country Club.

Joelle Miner, Trent’s mother and organizer of the event, says they started the tournament in 2005, the year after he died at age 19, following a battle with cancer. She says each subsequent event has helped her family’s healing process, and she’s excited to bring it back for another year. Participants in the event will be divided into two categories, with kids age 13 and under and their adult partners teeing off at 9 a.m. with an alternate shot format. Teams that include those age 14 and up will hit the links at 1 p.m. for a best ball tournament. The cost to participate is $10 per person for the younger division, and $25 for the older, and both include a meal at the country club. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.

All proceeds will benefit three different entities, but Joelle says most of the funds will go to the annual Trent Miner Memorial Scholarship fund, which the family established as a way to say “thank you” to the community for their support. “He had just come through high school graduation in Perry, and (we saw) all the generosity of people that supply scholarships to these Perry High School kids. And you know it was really neat to see ones that he got, to put them on your table and show like, ‘You know wow, these people chose our kid for this.’ We’re all Perry grads, our family, so (it) seemed like a nice place to definitely give back the majority of our funds.”

Funds will also be given to the Make-A-Wish foundation and the Caringbridge charitable organization, which Joelle says were both invaluable resources to the Miner family during Trent’s illness. The winners of the tournaments will receive prizes, and there will also be contests for longest drive, longest putt, closest to the pin, and more.
