The 40th annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival is this weekend, but before Saturday’s festivities kick off, people are invited to watch the 6th annual Sweet Corn Princess Contest.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the Adel Stage and Pavilion. Girls in 2nd-4th grade who live in the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District will take part in the contest, though the organizers emphasize that they won’t actually be competing because the winner is chosen at random. Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce Board Vice President Rebecca Hillmer says the ceremony is always a big hit during the weekend, for both the participants and the audience. “It’s a fun event, it’s no pressure. They come up there and they usually have their fancy little dresses on, and the emcee Matt Ireland will ask them a series of questions. It’s kind of fun to hear the answers, and sometimes some secrets get exposed, and sometimes the girls don’t know what to say. But they do a pretty good job up there.”
Participants are reminded that there is a practice session on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Pavilion. The girls are then asked to report to the Raccoon Valley Bank Community House at 5:45 p.m. the day of the event. All contestants will then be able to ride on the Sweet Corn Princess float during the parade on Saturday.
