It was picture perfect weather all three days of the 150th birthday celebration for the City of Grand Junction.

Organizers are calling the once-in-a-lifetime event a tremendous success. GJ 150 Committee member Alan Robinson was impressed by the entire event.

“Well it’s gone very well. We were really blessed by this fabulous weather we’ve had. And we had a great group that came together to plan all of the events. So we’re very pleased.”

Items from a time capsule from 1969, during Grand Junction’s centennial

Friday was highlighted by the carnival and the evening’s entertainment with local band “Through the Darkness.” Saturday was the main day of activities. There were several contests including the oldest citizen, which was Dwight “Red” Mount. Several individuals took part in the best beard contest. The People’s Choice went to Harold Osterman, the longest beard was Tom Harm and the fullest beard was Haven Frantz. Claudia Light won the trivia contest, Fran Teagarden won the pie baking contest and the quilt winner was Montana Kiley. There were nine individuals who were the fourth generation of Grand Junction residents. Those included: Willis Herrick, Leo Kersey, Keith Hoskinson, Johnette Kellogg, Janice Gilley, Harold Osterman, Gene Moranville, Romona Kersey and Phyllis Gannon.

Saturday also included the carnival, the parade, The Isiserettes, the evening beverage garden entertainment of Jamie Kelley and a performance from the Greene County Singers.

Robinson said the planning committee opened the time capsule that was in front of the library from the City’s centennial prior to the sesquicentennial celebration. Items included a personalized letter from then Governor Robert Ray, newspapers from 1969 and coins, among other items. Robinson said they are working on another time capsule that they will bury.

“We asked people to contribute what they think would be great items to put into this time capsule. We are still compiling the suggestions, so it’s going to be fun to sit down as a group and go through those.”

Anyone with suggestions for the time capsule can contact City Hall. To see pictures from the event, check out Raccoon Valley Radio’s Facebook page.
