Since announcing her candidacy for Greene County Treasurer, Katlynn Mechaelsen has kept one of her campaign promises, and that is issuing driver’s licenses.
Mechaelsen is certified by the Iowa Department of Transportation to issue driver’s licenses. She says the process took longer than expected, due to the federal government shutdown at the beginning of the year. However, now she says she is certified to issue a driver’s licenses, making that part of her office available full-time, along with Driver License Deputy Marlee Ruth. Mechaelsen talks about one area she is not certified to do with the DOT.
“So I am only issuing (driver’s licenses). I mean I can do anything that has to deal with your driver’s license and getting you a new one. I’m not going to do drives, my plate is a little full. So if you do have to drive with an examiner, we do still ask that you call and schedule an appointment.”
Mechaelsen notes that if both her and Ruth are gone, she has another part-time employee that is DOT certified.
“We hired Connie Valder and she is our driver’s examiner. She just retired from the DOT, she worked in Fort Dodge. She is my driver’s examiner but she can also issue (driver’s licenses). So that is just a huge, huge win for the county.”
