The Iowa Department of Revenue will be holding the annual sales tax holiday this Friday and Saturday, and people throughout the state are encouraged to get their back-to-school clothes shopping done.

The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on August 2nd and runs until midnight on August 3rd. During that time frame, all clothes and shoes priced under $100 are exempt from sales or local option taxes. The IDR says there are a few exceptions, such as accessories and athletic equipment, in addition to other rules that govern whether an item can be purchased tax free during the holiday. Any store in Iowa that is open this weekend and sells qualifying items is required to take part, and that also includes purchases made through online stores located in the state.

The IDR holds the sales tax holiday on the first Friday and Saturday of August every year as a way to help families save money on their back-to-school purchases and promote small businesses. Several stores in Perry have announced they will be participating in the event, including Backwards Boutique and Ben’s Five and Dime, and the Chamber of Commerce encourages people to shop locally during the tax-free weekend.
