A new scholarship program has become available through Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ Future Ready Iowa initiative, and the DMACC VanKirk Career Academy in Perry is one of the locations included.
Eddie Diaz, Director of DMACC’s Perry center, says their welding program was selected as a technical area in high-demand, and students are eligible for “Last Dollar Scholarships” to take part. “DMACC and community colleges in the state have identified certain careers that if you apply for this Last Dollar Scholarship, the State of Iowa will cover it 100%. There’s a couple stipulations: you need to apply for financial aid first (and) they’re focusing on recent high school graduates or people over the age of 20. But it’s a great, great opportunity.”
There are other programs offered elsewhere in the state, but for now the welding program is the only one offered in Perry. The deadline to apply is this coming Thursday, so Diaz says tomorrow the DMACC center in Perry will be offering aid to anyone who needs help signing up. He adds, people can stop into the VanKirk Career Academy at any time to learn more about this and other educational opportunities.
