As we turn towards the later part of summer, is it still worth it to try and plant flowers and vegetables?
Thomas Jefferson Gardens Board Member Jean Walker says flowers can be planted anytime of the year. She points out that even the deadest plant can be replanted and if treated right, will bloom throughout the rest of the year. Walker notes that certain vegetables can be planted again, like green beans, and if you haven’t planted a vine crop yet, there’s still time.
“I know people think that’s a little different. But you can plant like your acorn squash or whatever and you will still have a good crop of acorn squash. And the later you plant your vine crops, the better off you are because you won’t get all those plant problems as you would if you planted first thing in the (spring). You’ll still have plenty of crop to get you through the fall.”
Walker also urges gardeners to be on the lookout for plant blight or signs of insects and treating them when you can.
