The City of Jefferson is currently going through the process to convert residential garbage pickup to an automated system.
According to a release from City officials, the conversion to the automated system will start on September 3rd. On that date, customers are not to use the four bag or 2 35-gallon garbage cans, but instead use the new 95-gallon garbage container. Each container has a serial number attached to it, which means the container is the property of the City and it stays with the property, not the property owner. Customers are not responsible for paying for the initial container.
There are also 200 of the smaller, 65-gallon containers, which customers can request, but City officials recommend trying the 95-gallon containers because those are easier to maneuver, due to the size of the wheels. Customers are also responsible for paying for any lost or stolen containers at the purchase fee set by the City.
The monthly charge for once a week garbage pickup remains the same of $10.45 for the 95-gallon container. If a customer wants the smaller size, the monthly charge remains the same.
Garbage containers are to be left at the curbside no sooner than 12 hours prior to your normal garbage pickup day and then are to be taken off of the curbside no later than 12 hours after pickup.
The new 95-gallon containers will be delivered to each household starting August 26th and are not to be used until September 3rd. Anyone with questions can call 386-3252.
