If you’ve driven through Minburn on Highway 169 in the last week, you might have already noticed that Dallas County’s newest work of art has been completed.

The “Freedom Rock” was started and completed last week by Greenfield artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, and it’s located just to the south of the Nineteen14 Depot. It features representations of the five Wilson brothers from Perry on the south face of the 3,200-pound boulder, and depictions of famous athletes and war heroes Nile Kinnick from Adel and Bob Feller from Van Meter on the north side. Sorensen told Raccoon Valley Radio that it was no coincidence that the famous Perry brothers are featured on the side you would pass in going to Perry, while the other direction features the two famous southern Dallas County figures.

The artwork was commissioned by the Minburn American Legion, Post 99 for $5,000. They also plan on spending an additional $13,000 for landscaping around the artwork, and fundraising for the project is ongoing. The Freedom Rock project was started in 2013, with the ultimate goal of having a rock painted to honor veterans in all 99 counties in Iowa. The commissions were set behind this year, as Sorensen spent the first four months of 2019 in the State Legislature, as the Representative for House District 20.
